FAFSA, Grants, Loans, etc.

  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): Students can begin filling out the FAFSA on October 1st and 2019 tax information will be used to fill out the financial information section of the FAFSA.
    • Before beginning the FAFSA, students and one parent/guardian should register for a FSA ID. This can be done at any time! The FSA ID permits students and parents/guardians to electronically sign FAFSA documents, access personal records, and make binding legal obligations.
    • To obtain a FSA ID and complete the FAFSA, use only this web address:  www.fafsa.ed.gov. DO NOT use any other web address!! Make sure your web address has a .gov to ensure that you are not on a fraudulent site.
  • Institutional Grants: There are other grants in addition to federal aid. Colleges provide institutional grants to help make up the difference between college costs and what a family can be expected to contribute through income, savings, loans, and student earnings. Other institutional grants, known as merit awards or merit scholarships, are awarded on the basis of academic achievement. Some merit awards are offered only to students whose families demonstrate financial need, while others are awarded without regard to a family’s finances. Some grants come with special privileges or obligations. You will want to find out about the types of grants awarded by each college you are considering.
  • Loans: Unlike grants or work study, loans are borrowed money that must be repaid, with interest. These are real loans- just like car loans or mortgages. Students cannot have these loans cancelled because they do not like the education they receive or because they are having financial difficulty. These loans are a serious obligation, so students need to think about the amount that must be repaid over the years before taking out a loan. There are several different types of loans such as Federal Perkins Loans, Stafford Loans, and PLUS Loans. More information about these loans can be found at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/home.
